Product Design Pitfalls and How We Overcame Them

We’ve been quite busy here at Bifarm, further developing and perfecting our Future Farm line of products with the announcement of our commercial aeroponics Raised Bed system. Through a series of design drafts, collaborations, tests and retests, we’ve honed our system to make commercial aeroponic growing simpler and easier. With three innovative features, our Raised Bed system is now more practical, customizable, and user-friendly.


Root Chamber Lid Material


In previous designs of the Bifarm Raised Bed system, our root chamber lids were made from a molded hardshell plastic. We soon realized, however, that by changing the material, we could improve our lids in multiple ways. Now, our lids are made from Expanded Polypropylene foam, or EPP for short. This wonder foam has “outstanding energy absorption, multiple impact resistance, thermal insulation, buoyancy, water and chemical resistance, exceptionally high strength to weight ratio and 100% recyclability” (British Plastics Federation). The new EPP lids are food safe for all plants, including accumulators, and have enhanced our overall Raised Bed system design by improving insulation to help maintain stable root zone temperatures. As well, this material allows for customizable plant site configurations to suit your plant-growing needs and creative whims. We understand that one size does not fit all so we’re excited to provide this custom solution to our customers.

Light Attachment and Height


We’ve also improved the framing that supports grow lights. Our latest design can withstand heavier lighting equipment with ease by evenly distributing the weight across the Raised Bed frame. This advancement allows us to provide an even safer product for our customers. We’ve also added an extra step to our consultation process to tailor our product to our clients’ crop choices and further enhance customer support. At first, this may not seem relevant to a lighting frame; however, we’ll use this important step to determine the best height to build the frames in. For instance, if short frames are used on tall-growing crops, the lighting equipment may not be high enough to provide full and even coverage across the Raised Bed. Improper light coverage on plants may lead to uneven growth and prevent the plants from growing at their optimal rate or reaching their maximum potential.


Frame Assembly


Our third and final major change is to our Raised Bed base frame itself. This part of the frame holds the two root chambers and connects to our lighting frame. We’ve given this assembly a total design overhaul. The frame is now pre-built in an accordion-like fashion where it can be seamlessly folded onto itself. This new design has made for logistically-friendly packaging, helping us cut down on shipping costs and pass the savings onto you. But wait, there’s more! The frame also has a super speedy assembly time of only a few seconds — we wanted to create a product with a quick and simple set up so that our customers can get their new projects up and running as smoothly as possible. Knowing many of our customers will be purchasing the Raised Bed in bulk, exorbitantly long installation times are not an option.
