Plant Cloning with Aeroponics

Back in the day science fiction promised a future full of amazing technological advancements like flying cars, hoverboards, and deep space travel. Although we have yet to reach the dreams of our sci-fi predecessors, we have still come a long way! Like with aeroponics. Who would have thought that scientific organizations such as NASA would discover ways to sustainably farm in space without soil or excessive amounts of water? But the amazing science of aeroponics doesn’t stop there. Did you know that aeroponics could even help you clone your plants? This sounds something straight out of science fiction but it’s true!

Here’s how it’s done:

  • Cloning. This process involves collecting cuttings, sections of a plants stem or roots, in order to grow new but genetically identical plants. Many plants can be cloned. Some of the most popular being succulents. Plants belonging to this category can be cloned by simply removing the plant’s leaves and allowing them to take root.

Why is it beneficial?

  • Cost-effectiveness and simplicity. Cloning can increase plant supply from the ones growers already have. Reducing the need to purchase new plants. It's even possible to create a nearly infinite number of clone starting from just one plant. Can you imagine having a continuous supply from just one plant purchase? 
  • Preserves genes. The average do-it-yourselfer or home gardener may not see the need for preserving genes but its an advantage to professional cultivators. Cloning lends its use to larger-scaled cultivation efforts where control is key over desirable characteristics. Growers can replicate their plants with the best strains, yield, or resistance to diseases.

So, where does aeroponics come in?

  • Optimum environment. Aeroponic systems such as our very own Bifarm Bud and AeroKit provide a great environment for plant cuttings to propagate. It’s been proven that aeroponics creates healthier and stronger roots that in turn grow healthier and stronger plants faster. Depending on the species of plant, cuttings will require different levels of humidity, temperature, and nutrients to maintain an ideal growing environment.
